Are you making the worst design mistake in your home?

Designing your home can be part exciting and part overwhelming. And that can lead to us making the worst design mistake in our home. The solution is easier than you think.

Have you ever walked into someone’s beautifully designed home and thought something seems off. All the pieces in the room are gorgeous and yet, there is something missing?

That’s because you could have the most beautifully designed home in the neighborhood and yet be making this one design mistake. It’s easy to fall victim to it, especially in today’s social-media inspired times.

Avoid making this worst design mistake in your home

We are constantly bombarded with images of beautifully styled interiors on social media and in magazines. Whether you follow professional designers or chronic diy-ers, Instagram offers a virtual feast for the eyes.

Of course, we want our homes to look just as stunning. In our rush to show off our homes, we often incorporate the latest trends without stopping to consider if they even truly reflect our style and personality or function as per our needs.

Ironically, the fear of making a design mistake causes the worst design mistake

Often times it is fear that drives this behavior. If the thought of designing your home overwhelms you and gives you the hives; following the trends can be a safe bet. Everyone is doing it and designers are swearing by it, so you can’t go wrong.

We are afraid – afraid of making the wrong decisions; afraid of taking design risks that might not pay off; and perhaps most importantly, afraid of what others will say (or think) of us if our homes look less stylish, less elegant, less tidy. Just LESS.

But here’s the thing – blindly following trends makes our homes feel impersonal and devoid of character. They become cookie-cutter homes.

Take a peek at a designer's home and see how they are not afraid to make some bold statements.

The difference between a house that is staged to sell and a home that is designed to live in

Have you ever stopped to think about the difference between a house that is staged to sell and a home that is designed to live in?

The difference is YOU. Your personal touches – photos of memorable moments, souvenirs from vacations, your kid’s artwork framed and proudly displayed, even your weekly planner pinned on the kitchen wall – these are what make your home a true reflection of you.

It could be the courage you display in choosing a color that is not a current trend. Discover which color resonates with you.

For the longest time my wardrobe was filled with all shades of blue, but I have noticed a shift recently and my new favorite is blush and the many shades that it offers. Don't be afraid because your tastes are evolving. You can adapt your style to the new you.

How do we avoid this common and worst design mistake?

So, how can we avoid this common design mistake? It starts with knowing your own style. And no, it doesn’t need to have a name. Take some time to think about what you truly love in terms of colors, patterns, and textures.

Inspiration is all around you – in a favorite piece of art; a beloved quilt; a cherished heirloom.

Another way to avoid blindly following trends is to prioritize timeless design elements. Classic pieces of furniture, quality materials and simple, well-executed design never goes out of style. Adding some personal touches to these classics will help you navigate the pitfalls of design.

“But what if I truly enjoy following trends?”

It’s important to remember that trends come and go. Your home should evolve with you. Instead of making drastic changes to keep up with the latest trends, consider incorporating smaller, more temporary elements, like throw pillows, rugs and accessories.

And if there’s one thing I have realized, it is that trends go around in circles. What was out two decades ago might become the latest design. Perhaps your design is not out-of-date, perhaps it is a look into the future!

Stop and consider your kid's room too.

Just like the rest of our homes, it’s essential to create a space for our little ones that reflects their personality and needs. Designing a kid’s room is a wonderful opportunity to get creative and think outside the box.

The best part is that it does not need to flow with the rest of the house. This is their haven, their safe place; and should evolve with their evolving personality. Don’t be afraid to bring in fun colors, playful patterns and interactive elements that will inspire their imagination and make them feel ‘at home’.

By avoiding the mistake of following trends blindly and instead focusing on creating a home that reflects who we are, we can create spaces that are not only beautiful, but also truly meaningful.

Embrace your unique style and create a home that you and your family will love for years to come – a celebration of your Life.
